Female atoms roll through tourney

FEMALE ATOM The Kamloops HERricanes finished first in the Tier 3 atom division at the Wickenheiser Festival of Women's Hockey in Burnaby on the weekend. The team's players were awarded medals by hockey icon Hayley Wickenheiser, the host of the tournament. Rebekah Schmutz posted the shutout as Kamloops opened with a 15-0 victory over the Vancouver Angels. Kennedy Robidoux scored a goal and was MVP, and Nicole Thomas scored three goals and had two assists and Katie Brayer scored twice and helped out on two others. Ouimet also scored. Schmutz had another shutout and Ashley Irvine was MVP in a 10-0 victory over the North Shore Avalanche. Camryn Filimek scored twice, and Nicole Thomas, Brayer, Moffett, Stasiuk, Robidoux, Knight, Ouimet and Amanda Thomas had the other goals. Moffett had three assists. Amanda Thomas was MVP of the third game, a 9-3 victory over the Meadow Ridge Barracudas. Nicole Thomas had two goals and two assists, with Stasiuk scoring once and picking up two assists and Knight earning two helpers. Nola Clarke had three goals, and Filimek, Brayer and Moffett also scored in support of Schmutz. Stasiuk's two goals earned her MVP in an 11-1 semifinal victory over the Angels. Brayer had three goals, Clarke had two goals and two helpers, Knight scored twice and Ouimet and Moffett also scored. Schmutz posted her third shutout - and fifth victory -as the HERricanes defeated the Barracudas 5-0 in the final. Nicole Thomas had three goals and was MVP, with Stasiuk and Moffett also scoring in the victory. * * * PEEWEE TIER 3 The North Kamloops Lions lost in the final at a weekend tournament in Nelson. Taylor Kaban posted the shutout and Haden Nordick had a goal and three assists as the Lions defeated Salmon Arm 6-0 in the opener. Lane Grunerud and Nathan Thiessen each had two goals, Hunter Dairon singled, Corson Nordick had two assists and Adam Harrison was MVP. Nathan Nesci posted the shutout and MVP Brendan Mucha had two assists in a 5-0 victory over Penticton. Brandon Gremaud, with two, Harrison, Kaden Dempsey and Eric Bertuzzi scored for the winners. MVP Josh Bymoen had a goal as the Lions played to a 3-3 draw with Castlegar. Thiessen and Dempsey also scored in support of Kaban. The Lions needed double overtime to defeat Penticton 3-2 in a semifinal. Mucha had two goals and Gremaud singled in support of Nesci, who earned the MVP award. In the final, the Lions fell 5-3 to Castlegar. Kaban took the goaltending loss, with MVP Bymoen, Benjamin Ward and Dairon scoring the goals. * * * ATOM RECREATIONAL Mitchell Coxon's two goals helped the Ice Kings to a 5-4 victory over the Roughnecks at the McArthur Island Sport and Buy Cheap Cigarettes Online Event Centre on Saturday. Dexter Williams, Austin Burke and Olen Gelineau also scored for the winners, who had Hayden Buttazoni in goal. The Roughnecks, with Sam Fawcett in goal, got goals from Xander Denis, Ben Smith, Ben Anderson and Keegan LeBlanc. Smith also had two assists. --- Jacob Haines, Amanda Martin and Liam Campbell scored three goals each as the Warriors dumped the Assassins 17-8 on Saturday at the McArthur Island Sport and Event Centre. Connor Defoe, Justin Smailes and Corbin Guenther added two goals each for the winners, who had Joey McKinnon in goal. Singles came from Hunter Haukeness and RJ Gerow. Haines had three assists and Campbell had two. The Assassins, with Samuel Lewis in goal, got two goals apiece from Ryan Mitchell and Tristen Coetzer, and singles from Jakob Bennett, Ryan Sanderson, Adam Surgenor and Zachary Gilbert. --- Colton Woitas struck for three goals to lead the Legends past the Junior Blazers 8-3 on Sunday at Brock Arena. Tyler Fernie and Bryce Bertuzzi, each with two, and Chase Bodger also scored for the Legends, who got two assists from Julien Fehr. Bryton Neufeld earned the goaltending victory. Braidon Clark, with two, and Bhavin Serown scored for the Blazers, who had Josh Thom in goal. They gave their MVP award to Michael Baudin. --- Kaedyn Bert, Cameron Ryles and Jackson Diehl each scored twice on Saturday, helping the Oilers to a 9-6 victory over the Titans. Tye Kitamura, Liam Edstrom and Jax Anderson also scored in support of goaltender Ethan Hardy. The Titans got two goals from Jameson Rende and singles from Rylen Trent, Nathan Underhill, Caleb Campbell and Brooke Cave. Ethan Bottle was in goal. In an exhibition game, the Oilers lost 5-1 by the Roughnecks. Domenico Comita and Maxwell Hinkson, with two each, and Colby Cooper scored for the Roughnecks, who went with Sam Fawcett in goal. Edstrom stored for the Oilers, who had Hardy in goal. --- Zac Banks and Hunter Coleman each had two goals as the Thunder dumped the Vipers 7-2 on Sunday at Brock Arena. Jared Flodstrom, Adam Gordon and Tristan Hunt also scored for the winners, in support of goaltender Nolan Austin. The Vipers, with Sheehan Tobler in goal, got goals from Evan Kissack and Jacob Paton. --- Tristen Coetzer had three goals as the Assassins defeated the Junior Blazers 9-5. Zach Gilbert, Ryan Mitchell and Skyler Wiltsie each scored twice for the Assassins. Samuel Lewis was the winning goaltender. Stuart Holland, Connor Kennedy, Brady Pawlachuk, Stran Smith and Luken Murray had goals for the Junior Blazers, who went with  Josh Thom in goal.
