White Eagle Hall, Jersey City's new 800-seat concert venue, has been hosting a mix of national headliners since its opening last May. But on Friday, Dec. 1, it'll be locals only, as Mike Kuzan's The Latest Noise presents six artists for a night of Hudson County-bred rock and folk.
Kuzan is a local musician, promoter, and blogger whose The Latest Noise Live! puts together shows with the goal of giving up-and-coming local acts access to bigger stages and audiences than the usual gauntlet of open mic nights and bar shows. Bringing The Latest Noise to White Eagle Hall represents a quantum leap for both Kuzan and the bands involved, which include Big Wake, Sylvana Joyce The Moment, Christina Aless The Toll Collectors, Kuzan's own band Smoke Mirror Routine, and solo artists Jaime Rose and James Calleo. "And part of my goal in doing the interview was to see what Heath was thinking about in terms of bringing local music there. The national acts he's been bringing there have been really impressive and we talked about some of the shows he was excited about, like Mitski, the Drive By Truckers, and the Bouncing Souls, as well as some of the new Jersey City spots opening up like the Pet Shop and Porta, and the increasing number of places that were supporting local music."
By the end of the interview, Kuzan threw out the idea of a Lastest Noise at White Eagle Hall.
"I was surprised but he was very receptive to the idea and said, 'I have these two dates, pick one,'" Kuzan said. "So I picked Dec. 1 and then I was in business and had to figure out what I was going to do. It happened very organically, and he trusted me to pick the bands so I sat down and tried to figure out what local artists would work in a bigger venue.
"All of the bands I approached - Big Wake, Christina Alessi, Sylvana Joyce, James Calleo, Jaime Rose - they're all well-established parts of the Hoboken and Jersey City music scenes, people I've worked with before," Kuzan said. "And I also knew many of them had worked on projects like the ALEO Productions' Last Waltz and other projects. They were all part of this local community and I really wanted to include that vibe in this show.''
Indeed, the artists are excited.
"This is such a wonderful opportunity for us to perform our music on a large scale -- with big sound, a gorgeous stage and backdrop, a beautiful house, it's the next level venue that so many of us have been eagerly awaiting," enthused Christina Alessi, who will be performing with her band Christina Alessi The Toll Collectors Cheap Cigarettes For Sale Online. "It's a project that I've been incubating for a few years and I'm happy to finally be able to share it with everyone. We'll be playing several tracks off of it for our set."
The Toll Collectors will also be adding a backup singers Casey Solomon and Jaime DeJesus and guitarist Pierre Marceau for the night for a little extra oomph in their set.
Sylvana Joyce The Moment will be using the White Eagle Hall show to build momentum for their album release show at Maxwell's Tavern on Dec. 16.

"White Eagle Hall is a venue we wouldn't be able to step foot in as a performer if we didn't have the fervent support of our scene. This, to me, proves Hoboken and Jersey City's mettle and potential to be the next Nashville, the next New York City . or better. And I'm proud to be representing that push. Makes me feel like local royalty.
"I'm working with a lighting director for my album release at Maxwell's and it'll be super fun to try out some of our lighting ideas on a big stage," she added. "You always have to play for the room you want. I'm happy to get a glimpse of that room right now."
Every band will get 30 minutes so it's a showcase of local talent Cheapest Marlboro Cigarettes, Kuzan said.
"I think all the bands who are playing mesh very well together, and the idea is that you might come to the show to see one of your friends but catch another act on the bill and get really turned on to them,'' he said. "Everything's reactive, all of these bands will be playing more shows either together or separately and hopefully through the process, we'll get the greatest possible exposure for everyone involved."
Tickets for the White Eagle Hall show have been priced at $10 to make the event as accessible as possible.
"There are so many accomplished musicians in our area and I really hope this creates opportunities for local talent to partner with national acts," Alessi said. "The local showcases that Hoboken and Jersey City musicians are producing over the next couple of months are a really exciting indication of what's to come."
